Heat Illness

As part of living in the Eastern Sierra, we can expect heat waves during these summer months. To avoid costly workers compensation insurance claims, please consider Heat-Related Illnesses and our tips for beating the summer heat.

Symptoms of Heat-Related Illness can be broken down into two groups: Heat Exhaustion, and Heat Stroke. Though less severe, Heat Exhaustion can be significant enough for medical attention, and could lead to an employee missing days to recover. Some symptoms to look for are headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting, weakness, upset stomach, vomiting, wet skin, or mood changes such as irritability or confusion.

Heat Stroke is the most severe form of Heat-Illness. Symptoms include dry hot skin with no sweating, mental confusion or loss of consciousness, seizures, or convulsions.

If you will be working in the elements, and you know a heat wave is on the way, monitor your employees for these symptoms, but better yet, take the right precautions. Have employees take more breaks out of direct sunlight, use fans or AC, provide lots of water and electrolytes. Things to avoid include alcohol, caffeine, and heavy meals.

My personal favorite is to wear a brimmed hat. Stay cool out there everyone, and have a great summer!
