Deer Migration Alert

a deer standing in the snow

It’s that time of year again… The snow and cold weather have started the annual winter deer migration. Deer are now moving from the high country on the east side of Highway 395 across 395 into lower elevation winter ranges on the west side of the highway. A high number of deer-car collisions occur from October to December. Don’t be one of them!

Here are a few helpful driving tips:

  • Reduce your speed. Be alert and ready to avoid a collision. It’s easier to respond when you’re driving more slowly.
  • Pay extra attention to sections of the highway marked with deer crossing signs.
  • Use extra caution during storms. When storms come in, it pushes the deer to move. Plus it’s harder to see deer in stormy weather.
  • Be careful during low light hours in the morning and evening when it’s hard to see. Keeping your headlights on helps, but lack of visibility makes the risk go up anyway.
  • If you see one deer, there are likely more nearby. Slow down if you see deer, even if they look far away.

The fall can be a good time to review your auto insurance if you haven’t reviewed it in a while. If you have any auto coverage questions, contact us.
