Most Property Insurance Does Not Cover Floods

Most of us are far removed from the devastation that took place in Huston a couple weeks ago. However many of us have family or friends who live in the greater Huston Area.  Though we don’t have that caliber of torrential downfall or Hurricanes here in the Sierra, it is important to remember how devastating floods can be. Ground or Surface water is considered a flood, an overflowing creek or river is a flood, too much rain can cause a flood or flash flood. It is important to access your own risks and acquire a flood insurance policy.

Insurance policies for Homeowners or Business Owners Policies do not provide coverage for flood losses. A Separate policy has to be maintained by a carrier who participates in the National Flood Insurance Program. Especially if you live in a runoff area, it is important to review your insurance policy with your agent. It’s better to know, than to be surprised in the event of a loss.
